Mira Mar commands a coveted position along South Palm Avenue — a palm-lined city block nestled between Coconut Avenue to the north and McAnsh Square to the south, among downtown Sarasota's most sought-after locations.Although the original hotel was demolished in 1982, the historic apartment block — now known as Mira Mar Plaza — remains a cherished fixture along South Palm Avenue, preserving its storied commercial storefronts and the heritage that defined a golden era.
Constructed during Sarasota's vibrant 1920s land boom, the Mira Mar Hotel rose as a distinguished landmark of Mediterranean Revival architecture. Conceived by Chicago industrialist Andrew McAnsh, the development included a luxurious hotel, connected apartments and an adjacent auditorium — all completed with remarkable speed. Groundbreak began October 6, 1922, and within just 60 days, the apartment buildings were finished.
Named for its commanding "sea view" overlooking the bayfront, it became a favored retreat for celebrities, athletes and dignitaries from across the country.
